Welcome to my cozy corner of crochet creations! As I begin this new journey with my redesigned website, I couldn’t wait to share my latest project with you. A handmade crochet baby blanket, but not just any blanket. This one is infused with love and excitement for my first grandchild who is due to arrive towards the end of February. So, grab your hook and let’s dive into the colourful world of crochet and baby snuggles.

This story began with the exciting news from my youngest daughter on my birthday. She and her husband were expecting a baby boy! Of course my mind instantly raced with ideas, but one stood out. A handmade crochet baby blanket. In spite of it being the middle of the Australian summer, I opted for the softness of pure Aussie wool, guaranteeing coziness all year round.

After searching patterns and inspirations, I came across a variation of the Hugs and Kisses crochet baby blanket, affectionately named Little Boy Blue. This pattern, with cross stitches similar to crochet cables and rows of bobbles, instantly caught my eye. The texture – it’s simply irresistible!

Blanket colour combinations

Now, let’s talk colours! Deciding on Bendigo Classic 8-ply (DK/#3 weight) wool shades, I found myself drawn to a calm palette perfect for a nursery. Forget-me-not (a light blue), Aztec (a darker blue) for depth, Soft Jade – my daughter’s nursery hue of choice, and Raffia for a touch of earthiness. I wanted to tweak the design further, so I searched Instagram for colour combinations. Eventually I stumbled upon a variation by @the_colourful_hooker. I decided to accentuate the bobble row with Soft Jade.

Crochet baby blanket – the border

With the body of the blanket complete, it’s time to add the finishing touches. The border – an opportunity for creativity! A simple option of rows of double crochet might be the quickest. But I want to add a burst of colour. I’ve also considered an envelope border, perhaps with bobbles or stripes of Soft Jade. I truely can’t wait to finish this project and gift it to my daughter and grandson. Stay tuned for the grand reveal or subscribe to my newsletter for an exclusive sneak peek.

As I await the arrival of this little bundle of joy, crafting this crochet baby blanket has become more than a just another project; it’s a journey of love and creativity. Each stitch crochet with care holds the promise of warmth and comfort, an expression of my excitement for this new chapter. So, whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or a curious beginner, I invite you to join me in crafting comfort and spreading joy, one stitch at a time.

In the end, it’s not just a blanket; it’s a piece of my heart, stitched with love for my Little Boy Blue.
